I never knew my father when I was young,

But he writes and I write, and that makes me glad.

I’m can play virtually all sports, and football has always been my favorite, but I was rarely ever picked in high school…

My Dad was football captain till he was in his mid-twenties, something I recently found out and it’s stuck to my addiction center like a magnet!

I am Dr. Oluwajuyitan, the only medical doctor in my family,

But I have never felt at home with the name and title,

Because I revere the first Dr. Oluwajuyitan…

I have an M.D. and an MSc,

But I hope one day my son can mimic my father’s incredible Ph.D.!

As a child, whenever I saw my father, I was mostly scared…

As a teenager, I thought my father never cared…

As a young adult, I began to crave my father’s hair…

And some years later, I now understand why it was hard for him to always be there…

He was hard-working with principles,

and not much of a talker…

Like me, he dislikes drama,

and prefers to write and compose to pass on his message.

Only back home after my bedtime and always away before I woke up,

For seventeen years, my dad was a workaholic, and I barely got to know him.

Fifteen years later, and in the last three months, I have finally gotten to connect with my real dad…

I’ve known a lot of people and I’ll save you a long story, but my father is the most responsible human being I have ever known!

He has a strong mind and exudes a respectful aura

But he doesn’t mess around when it comes to his principles…

For my first few years, I only remembered my father amongst the following memories:

Teaching me how to support myself while falling when I was very young — I was always playing football outside so I fell down a lot…

The first speech he gave me after I had completed my driving lessons - Imagine everybody on the road is crazy, and anticipate mistakes from others… So, you have to do more than just be in control…

We didn’t have frequent conversations or regular interactions but almost all his inputs were ‘essential’ life lessons…

Ten miles before an anticipated hurdle, he would already have me prepared…

He didn’t talk much but he made sure to configure my brain with wisdom that would last me for a lifetime!

Throughout my whole life, everyone tells me I’m a carbon copy of my Dad but I never felt connected to him emotionally. The truth is I didn’t really know what I wanted or what I should have been expecting, and it didn’t help that I used to pay a bit of attention to the television in my youth…

These past few months have given me all the connections I need as I’m the kind of person that gets fulfilled the most with understanding.

I have had my fair share of challenges and have tried my hands at a lot of things in this life with many yet to reach my anticipated levels.

I know they still will but I doubt if they can overwhelm the joy my dad has cemented inside me. He sent me an unexpected message on 25th October 2022 telling me he was proud of me as a son. I am yet to do a quarter of the things I want to do but that statement has already put me in paradise…

I Love You, Dad.

Oh, did I mention my dad also listens to piano instrumentals? I found out that’s his go-to music all the times he drove me inside his car… Well, Hello??!

You may ask what happened during my early years in Nigeria and how come I only got to know my dad in the last three months of my time in the Country. Well, I know I have written extensively about the 8 years I spent in Ukraine in my Memoir/Audiobook, AFROLEON. However, I have lots of scribbled notes (at least two chapters worth) about my experiences before and after then, growing up in Nigeria and re-adjusting to life after Europe; I plan to collate them into a manuscript later on with the aim of publishing.

It might take a while still, though, as I have lots of ongoing projects, including a new book — my longest book of poems yet. I am about halfway into it but might need to return to the beginning because I want to refine some details and elements. Stay tuned.

Back to my Dad and my new-found joy; to end I’ll just entertain you with the growing list of things I find I have in common with my dad:

Eats Healthy,
Calm,
Dependable,
Intuitive,
Prefers texts to calls,
MY FACIAL APPEARANCE!
Charming,
Gentlemanly,
Respect & Wisdom,
Creativity,
Good Taste of Music,
Published 5+ Books (My Dad has 10+ but hey, our futures are bright!) 😉
And last but not the least, Family-Oriented!
